For the Pasta:
1 pound ziti pasta
1 tablespoon olive oil
For the Meat Sauce:
1 pound Italian sausage (mild or spicy), casing removed
1 small onion, diced
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 (28-ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (15-ounce) can tomato sauce
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
½ teaspoon sugar
½ cup water
For the Cheese Mixture:
1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese
1 large egg
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon dried basil
For Topping:
2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
½ cup grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
Prepare the Pasta:
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
Cook the ziti pasta until al dente, according to package instructions.
Drain and toss with olive oil to prevent sticking.
Make the Meat Sauce:
In a large skillet, cook the Italian sausage over medium heat, breaking it apart.
Add onion and garlic, sautéing until softened.
Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, salt, black pepper, Italian seasoning, red pepper flakes, sugar, and water.
Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Prepare the Cheese Mixture:
In a bowl, mix ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan, garlic powder, and dried basil.
Assemble the Baked Ziti:
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
Spread ½ cup meat sauce on the bottom of the dish.
Layer half of the cooked ziti, followed by half of the ricotta mixture, then half of the remaining meat sauce.
Repeat layers and top with shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.
Bake and Serve:
Cover with foil and bake for 25 minutes.
Remove foil and bake for another 10 minutes, until cheese is golden and bubbly.
Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
Garnish with fresh basil and enjoy!
