Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steaks:
1 lb ground beef
1/4 cup breadcrumbs
1/4 cup milk
1 egg
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
1 tbsp olive oil
For the Onion Gravy:
2 tbsp unsalted butter
1 large onion, thinly sliced
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
Instructions
For the Hamburger Steaks:
In a bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well combined, but don’t overwork the meat.
Form the mixture into 4 equal patties.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4–5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F). Remove patties from the skillet and set aside.
For the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 8–10 minutes, or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.
Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux. Gradually add beef broth while stirring, making sure to scrape up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Bring the gravy to a simmer and cook for 3–4 minutes, or until it thickens.
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes to let the flavors meld.
Serve the hamburger steaks with the onion gravy on top. Enjoy with mashed potatoes or rice!
