Savor the rich flavors of Southern-Style Hamburger Steak with savory onion and mushroom gravy. Perfect for hearty family dinners!
Ingredients
For the Hamburger Steak:
1 ½ lbs ground beef (80/20)
½ tsp garlic powder
½ tsp onion powder
½ tsp smoked paprika
Salt and pepper, to taste
1 tbsp olive oil
For the Gravy:
2 tbsp butter
1 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
8 oz mushrooms, sliced
2 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp fresh thyme (optional)
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Form into 4-5 patties.
Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the patties for 4-5 minutes on each side until browned and cooked through. Transfer the patties to a plate and set aside.
In the same skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add sliced onions and mushrooms, cooking until softened, about 8-10 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
Sprinkle flour over the onion and mushroom mixture, stirring to coat. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly, and bring to a simmer. Add Worcestershire sauce and fresh thyme (if using).
Return the hamburger patties to the skillet, spooning the gravy over the top. Let the patties simmer in the gravy for 5-10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Serve hot with mashed potatoes or your favorite side dish.
