Savory Southern-Style Biscuits and Sausage Gravy

Warm, flaky Southern-Style Biscuits smothered in rich sausage gravy create a comforting dish ideal for cozy breakfasts or family gatherings any time of year.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter chilled and cubed
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 pound breakfast sausage
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour for the gravy
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  2. Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it.
  6. Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness and cut out biscuits.
  7. Arrange the biscuits on a baking sheet and bake for 12-15 minutes.
  8. While the biscuits bake, prepare the sausage gravy.
  9. Cook the sausage in a skillet over medium heat until browned.
  10. Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir well to combine.
  11. Gradually add the milk while stirring constantly.
  12. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook until thickened, about 5-10 minutes.
  13. Season the gravy with black pepper and cayenne to taste.
  14. Serve the biscuits warm, topped generously with sausage gravy.
