Ingredients
  

  • 1 loaf of day-old bread cubed
  • 1 cup diced onion
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 cups vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon dried sage
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts optional
  • 1 cup dried cranberries or raisins optional

Method
 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
  3. Add the diced onion and celery to the skillet and sauté for about 5-7 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. In a large bowl, combine the cubed bread, sautéed vegetables, and herbs.
  6. Pour in the broth gradually, stirring to moisten the bread evenly.
  7. Add any optional ingredients like nuts or dried fruit, and season with salt and pepper.
  8. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish.
  9. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  10. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Let it rest for 10 minutes before serving.
